Broadcast Notes: Tips at Seattle (2/24)

Good morning from the Pacific Northwest. We usually say this in context of a road outpost since tonight is a road game, but it’s a 45 minute trek south into Kent, Washington which had the Silvertips waking up in their own beds today.

The 8th meeting out of 10 total between the Silvertips and Thunderbirds starts early tonight at 6:05pm, in coordination with the Thunderbirds’ annual all-day community hockey marathon at ShoWare Center. It means preparations are moved up an hour in advance, but not so much where the condensed day manipulates the routine as if preparing for a 4:05pm start or earlier.

The Tips won the last time in Kent, on Bryce Kindopp’s OT winner eight days ago – it broke a two year streak down the wrong path for the Tips, who previously hadn’t won in Kent since February of 2016.

Last night’s victory over Vancouver didn’t come with the highest degree of satisfaction, and Mitch Love rapidly addressed Vancouver elevating their game as well. There hasn’t been much practice time even with three days off surrounding Tuesday: Dennis Williams explained more of that in our pregame conversation yesterday.

Broadcast Notes: Tips vs. Spokane (2/18)

Updated developments: no Sean Richards as of now (still a TBD suspension for last Friday’s checking from behind major – we’re into the 4th day of “TBD”).

The Tips will see the Spokane Chiefs for the final time at Spokane Arena this season, the start of 7 of the final 12 games against opponents from the U.S. Division. The Tips have a 16-10-0-2 road record, so it suggests they’re comfortable in knowing how to handle the environment … that’ll come in handy, because five of the last 7 games against the U.S. Division will be on the road.

Playoff watch: the Tips are on the threshold, pardon the cliche. Kamloops does not play tonight, so the Tips need just one more point to lock up the “X” by their name in the standings for the 15th straight season – extending a current league record. They’d prefer a win, therefore multitasking by locking up a berth and knocking down the magic number for a division title and top seed in the Conference. They’re 5 up on Kelowna (1 game in hand) for the conference, and 7 up on Portland (2 games in hand) for the division.

MILESTONES: We’ll be ready to discuss them tonight. The next Patrick Bajkov goal sets him up as the Silvertips all-time leader. Kevin Davis will also play in the 336th game of his career tonight, passing Shane Harper to become the new Tips all-time leader. Carter Hart has 26 career bagels – tying Tyson Sexsmith for the league record. For the purposes of avoiding superstition with select members of audience, we’ll let you figure out the rest.

The Tips are 4-2-1-1 against Spokane this season.

  • NOT STANDING PAT: Patrick Bajkov, the leading Tips scorer, set the new Silvertips all-time scoring record with 264 points on Feb. 2, when he surpassed Zach Hamill with a first period power play goal … has twice tied his career high of 5 points … he needs one goal to surpass Tyler Maxwell for the Tips all-time goal record (108).
  • IRON MAN: Kevin Davis is scheduled to play in the 336th game of his WHL career tonight, surpassing Shane Harper for the Silvertips all-time record … Davis has 55 points in 59 games, ending Sunday (T-8, WHL d-men).
  • AGAINST THE U.S. DIVISION: The Tips are 20-8-1-2 against their opponents from the U.S. Division … seven of their final 12 games are against opponents from the U.S. Division (two at home, five on the road).
  • SPECIAL DELIVERIES: For the Silvertips special teams, the penalty kill is 1st in the WHL (83.7) … the Tips power play went 5-of-9 on Jan. 7 vs. Victoria, tying a franchise record for most power play goals in one game (5) … they went 3-of-7 on Sunday vs. Kamloops … Matt Fonteyne leads the Silvertips with 14 power play goals.

See you on the radio.

Tips vs. Kamloops (2/18)

It’ll get interesting, and don’t be surprised if “weird.” Garrett Pilon and Ondrej Vala face the Blazers, and Orrin Centazzo and Montana Onyebuchi face the Silvertips for the first time since the quartet were involved in the Jan. 7 trade.

It’s a 3-in-3 with condensed preparations on a condensed day, so we’ll see you on the radio to lay it all out.

BAJKOV WATCH: One goal away from tying Tyler Maxwell (107) for the Tips all-time record.

Broadcast Notes: Tips vs. Vancouver (2/10)

Tonight is the fourth meeting of six total between the Tips and Giants, and it’s a game that bears significance between the teams for the first time in awhile.

The Tips continue to hold onto first in the Conference and Division, while the Giants stand 6 points back still in contention for the B.C. Division. They haven’t made the playoffs since Don Hay was behind the bench in 2013-14. It’s likely they’re furiously approaching the end to their darkest days.

The Tips, while trying to shake off a 2-1 OT loss that stung from the fact they were 1:49 away from a shutout victory (read: Carter Hart has 25 of them, the WHL record is 26 held by Tyson Sexsmith), get the chance to put last night behind them quickly with the 2nd game in a “3-in-3.”

Since Nov. 11, they’ve only lost twice in a row on a pair of occasions, and are 27-7-1-1. They’re pretty good at this rebounding thing.

KEY MATCHUP: Tips power play (11th, trying to bounce back from 0-of-4 last night) against the Giants penalty kill (7th, WHL). The Tips are 5-of-16 in the season series against the Giants.

BAJKOV WATCH: He’s already got the points record, and needs just 1 goal to tie Tyler Maxwell for the Tips all-time goal scoring record (107).

KEVIN DAVIS WATCH: Tonight he’ll play in career game #331, surpassing Zack Dailey to move into 2nd on the Tips all-time list. Leader Shane Harper is just four games away.

Two CHL top 10 teams …

Top two in the Western Conference …

Two teams with Canada gold medalists …

Matchup two coming up.

We don’t need to tell you aside from that, plus Hart+Dube+Foote+red hot Fonteyne+red hot Dewar thrown into the mix that this will be a good one. That’s already assumed.

Dillon Dube had some pretty candid words about tonight, one that he circled on the calendar since a conversation with Carter Hart shortly before Team Canada went their separate ways.

Patrick Bajkov watch: one more goal or assist means the franchise points record. He’s tied with Zach Hamill at 262.

Broadcast Notes: Tips vs Portland (1/31)

The Everett Silvertips get the Portland Winterhawks two more times this season and while it may seem like a matchup that has mild flavor of vitriol – there’s five points of separation between first and second – these division matchups matter with 21 games to go.

The Silvertips goal: provide more space. The Winterhawks goal: close the gap with one game in hand.

The Silvertips have won nine of 10, and picked up points in every game since Portland beat them in early January, 4-3 on a goal by Jake Gricius in the final minute of regulation. One more win for the Silvertips secures the advantage in the overall series this season: they’re 5-3-0-0.

Patrick Bajkov watch: one more goal or assist means the franchise points record. He’s tied with Zach Hamill at 262.
